1. Connecting Your AI Brain π§
A step-by-step guide to Daan's initial setup. Input your essential API information so Daan can start talking to the AI. This is the first and most crucial step!
π Welcome to Daan!
Hello! Welcome to Daan, a concise and efficient AI chat client. To make Daan work, we first need to connect it to an "AI brain" β an AI service. This requires something called an API Key, which acts like your exclusive key π to access the AI service.
Before you start, you'll need:
- Daan ready: Make sure you have the Daan application or web version open.
- An API Key: You need to obtain an API Key from an AI service provider.
- Most common is OpenAI: You can visit the OpenAI website, register an account, and get an API Key.
- Other services: If you use other services compatible with the OpenAI API (like some regional providers or self-hosted APIs), you'll need to find their corresponding API Key.
- What if I don't have a Key? Without an API Key, Daan cannot connect to the AI service to have conversations. Getting a Key is a necessary step.
π Let's Get Configuring:
-
Find the Settings:
- After launching Daan, look at the Left Sidebar (Navigation Panel).
- To the right of the "Daan" logo in the top-left corner, you'll see a gear icon βοΈ. This is the "System Settings" button.
- Go ahead and click it! π±οΈ
-
Navigate to API Settings:
- A settings window will pop up.
- At the top of the window, you'll usually see several tabs, like "API", "MCP", "UI", "Function".
- Please find and click the "API" tab. This is where we configure our "key".
-
Enter Your Exclusive Key (API Key):
- In the "API" settings page, locate the area labeled "Global API Key" or similar.
- You'll see a text input box. This is where you paste your API Key.
- Copy the API Key you obtained earlier (it's usually a long string of letters and numbers).
- Paste it into this input box.
- β¨ Don't worry: For security, the Key you paste will usually be displayed as dots βββββ or asterisks *****. This is normal.
-
(Optional) Specify the AI Service Address (Base URL):
- If you're using the official OpenAI service: Great! You usually don't need to change this. Daan knows where to find OpenAI by default.
- If you're using a third-party or self-hosted service: These services might have their own "address" (URL). You need to tell Daan this address.
- Find the area labeled "Global API Base URL" or similar.
- In the input box, enter the full URL provided by the service (e.g.,
https://api.example.com/v1
, replace this with your actual URL). π - Unsure about the address? Please check the documentation or instructions for the third-party service you are using.
-
Check Available AI Providers:
- Scroll down on the same page, and you'll see the "API Providers" list.
- This lists the various AI "brain" sources Daan supports, like OpenAI, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude, etc.
- Make sure the switch next to the provider corresponding to your API Key (e.g., OpenAI) is turned ON β . If it's off β, Daan won't try to use it.
-
Save Settings:
- Daan usually saves your input automatically. Look for an explicit "Save" button πΎ on the interface. If there is one, click it.
- If you don't see a save button, your settings have likely taken effect automatically after you entered them.
π Congratulations!
You've successfully connected Daan to an AI brain! Daan is now ready to serve you. Next, you can set up default models or jump right into your first AI conversation!
π€ Frequently Asked Questions:
- Q: Does the API Key cost money?
- A: Most AI service providers (including OpenAI) charge based on usage for their API calls. Please check the pricing policy of the service you're using. Often, there's a small free credit for testing when you sign up.
- Q: Is entering my Key secure?
- A: Daan's description mentions that API keys are stored securely in your browser's local storage. This generally means the key isn't sent to Daan's servers but is used directly from your computer to communicate with the AI service. However, ensure your computer itself is secure.
